As if controversies surrounding Dirty Picture, a biopic on Silk Smitha directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor were not enough, here comes another, from none other than Silk’s family themselves.

The latest official trailer of the movie, The Dirty Picture, has been received both with awe as well as with protest. This time the protest comes from none other than Silk Smitha’s family.
It is hardly like that only a few have heard of the film “The Dirty Picture”, as the film has been ridden with controversies ever since it was announced that Vidya Balan would be doing this biopic of Silk Smitha.
For those who really have no clue to the movie, Dirty Picture is a biopic of Silk Smitha, a sex siren from the south who sizzled the screen both in the south as well as Bollywood in the 1980’s. Directed by Milan Luthria, this film has been a source of great controversy as to how Vidya Balan would look in her portrayal of Silk.
Silk Smitha or Vijaylakshmi, her real name, was born in a tiny village, Kavali near Eluru in Andhra Pradesh to Sri Rama Murthy and Narsamma. Having received education only up to the fourth standard due to financial constraints, Vijaylakshmi left for Chennai where she was by chance spotted by Vinu Chakravarthy, an actor and filmmaker.
This golden opportunity got her into Tamil films and she was renamed “Silk Smitha” by Vinu Chakravarthy after the character she portrayed in his film Vandichakram, which was her debut into films. It was success all the way from there and Silk never looked back.

In her career span of 17 years, Silk worked in over 450 films that included Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films with fame taking her right to the top. However, when a new generation of actors took over, Silk’s career took a setback.
Sadly after her unhappy marriage, Silk began to go into depression, with alcoholism and financial problems taking her deeper into the abyss. It was after she decided to get into production and with a series of failed ventures that Silk could take it no more.
This was when she took that disastrous step, when she decided to end her life for that is what is believed to have happened when her body was found in her Chennai apartment.
Now with Dirty Picture bringing back all her memories and Vidya Balan playing the controversial role, there have arisen a string of arguments regarding Silk’s life.
Her brother and some relatives are critical about Silk’s portrayal by Vidya Balan in the film The Dirty Picture and are unhappy about the blatant content that is being pictured using the southern star’s name.
They believe that the makers are doing it only to tarnish the image of Silk Smitha and are considering legal action against the filmmakers and are planning to file a petition for stopping the film from being released.
All good things have to meet with disappointment first, but we are hoping the best!
